Wildflowers, Mushrooms, and the Forest in Full Spring Awakening

Early April is one of the most magical moments of the year in the mountains of North Georgia.

The forest is fully waking up. Hillsides are dotted with wildflowers. Millipedes and salamanders move through the leaf litter. Edible spring greens begin to emerge everywhere. And most exciting of all — this is often the peak window for morel mushrooms.

Morels are one of the most sought-after wild foods in North America. Their honeycomb caps blend perfectly into the forest floor, making them easy to miss unless you know what to look for.

On this special hike at Just Love Forest, we’ll explore the landscape together while learning how to read the forest for signs of the uncommon half-free morel habitat and other spring treasures.

Along the way you’ll learn:

• How to recognize habitats where morels thrive

• The key wildflowers and spring plants emerging this time of year

• Edible and medicinal species that appear during early spring

• How forest ecosystems transition from winter into full spring life

• How to slow down and notice the incredible biodiversity most hikers walk past

If we’re fortunate enough to find morels, we’ll cook them together and enjoy them as part of a shared forest meal.

Just Love Forest is a protected mountain landscape, and this will be the only public hike I’m hosting here this spring, a rare chance to experience the land during one of its most vibrant seasons.
